The Trinamool Congress on Tuesday staged a road blockade and protest at Tinbatti More in Siliguri, alleging harassment of common people in the name of the Special Intensive Revision process. The demonstration by party workers and supporters led to traffic disruption in the area for a brief period, prompting police deployment to maintain order.
Addressing protesters, Dabgram–Phulbari Block President Dilip Roy accused the Election Commission of deliberately troubling voters during the SIR exercise. He claimed that people are being repeatedly called to offices and asked to submit unnecessary documents, describing the process as anti-democratic and intimidating for ordinary citizens.
Roy warned that if the alleged harassment continues, the party will intensify its agitation across the state. He said Tuesday’s protest involved only a limited number of participants but signalled the possibility of a larger movement in the coming days.
Trinamool leaders said the protest was aimed at safeguarding voters’ rights and opposing what they described as unjust practices during the revision of electoral rolls. The incident has triggered renewed political debate in the region over the conduct of the SIR process.
